Plastic Pollution in the World
This week, I watched three TED talks, which is a presentation/video that focuses on current world issues such as climate change, wars, or even coral reefs. However, the TED talk I'm focused on talks about plastic pollution.
The main idea of these three TED talks were to reduce the overall human footprint on our wildlife from either cutting down on fertilizer which can create “dead zones”, or trying to reduce plastic waste emitted into the wild. One idea that I found interesting was raising the overall price of plastic by a quarter of a cent to make it an item of value. I thought this was interesting because this could potentially decrease plastic waste in the world because now, people can actually profit off of picking up plastic waste.
I agree with this idea because it can truly help with the pollution issue. This can have a beneficial snowball effect because one of the largest ailments to wildlife is plastic pollution. One piece of evidence that supports my view comes from this TED talk. It creates the idea and explains how if the leaders in producing plastic bump up the price of plastic by .25 or even .15 of a cent then it will create value of plastic. This will make people want to pick plastic up because it is now an article of value. This supports my view because now plastic waste will decrease and the footprint we have created will be lessened because of this new way to create profit.
Another piece of evidence that supports my view is from the same TED talk. The speaker, Andrew Forrest, states “Where pollution is the worst, the profit will be the best.”. This supports my view as well because now there is a money initiative to pick up plastic and help create a cleaner world. This quote I feel like can speak to everybody because everybody wants to make profit, and now if the price of plastic is raised, there will be a very large amount of profit in very polluted areas such as this.

All in all, I feel like if we continue to go down the path that we are taking, the Earth won't be around for too long and neither will we. We need to change how we act and our thought process on if we throw something into the wild it's not our problem . This couldn't be more wrong because it will somehow effect you at some point in time with plastic pollution, the decrease in wildlife due to this, or even just a fine from a cop who saw you litter.

Vincent, I really liked you post, you did well on citing all your examples and supporting your claims with evidence from the talks. I was wondering how raising the price in plastic is going to go down? As in how is it going to be made possible to do this? Which places is the plastic pollution the worst? Do you really think this is going to work?
ReplyDeleteThe largest plastic companies will raise the price of the plastic they produce so that creates a snowball effect of raised prices in plastic. Pollution is worst in many 3rd World countries and over populated countries such as India. I feel like it can work if a majority of people support this movement/idea.
DeleteGood summary of the main idea and issue. Is it possible now to make money off of plastic as it is to make money off of soda cans and bottles in some states? Incorporating other sources would help you develop your ideas and not be quite so repetitive.
ReplyDeleteIt is possible to make money off of plastic but it will take a large quantity of it to make any real profit. This is because if/when the price of plastic raises, it'll only be raised by around .025 to .01 of a cent.
